Our vibrant Rooftop community hosts numerous events throughout the year. Please take a look at the list and check the Rooftop calendar frequently so you will not have to miss a thing!

Back to School Picnic

Rooftop celebrates the start of each new school year with a festive & fun Welcome Back to School Picnic. Kids play in the playground or throw balls, frisbees on the field It’s a relaxed afternoon where families can catch up after the summer with old friends, and meet new ones too! This is a PTA hosted event.

Back to School Night

About three weeks after the beginning of the school year, parents are invited to come to the classroom. Your child’s teacher will walk you through the daily classroom schedule and inform you about important classroom information, such as curriculum, homework and academic goals. During this meeting you can discuss how you can get involved as parents/caregivers and sign up on a volunteer schedule.

Mayeda campus: August 31st from 5:00 - 6:30pm. Meet at the Mayeda gym

Twin Peaks campus: August 30th 5:00-6:30pm. Meet in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR)

Family Art Night

Family Art Nights at the Twin Peaks Campus and Mayeda Media Nights are evening workshops that give parents and their children the opportunity to play and learn together through a variety of arts experiences.

First Fridays (Monthly)

Every First Friday of the month from 9:30am - 10:15am, our coffee crew invites you for delicious home baked snacks and coffee/tea in the Rooftop Garden next to the CASA bungalow at the Twin Peaks Campus. It is a great way to start off your morning before you head off to work, run an errand or help out in the classroom. PTA members and the school principal are available to answer your questions but mostly parents enjoy this brief time to catch up on the latest news. Don't be a stranger and have a cup of coffee!

Open House

Our Spring Open House is a family event, where you can come with your child to see the work that has been done by the students over the year. Bring the entire family and have your child give you a tour of the classroom. Say hi to your child’s teacher and the other classroom families, and take a look at the other Rooftop classrooms.

Volunteer Events

Greening Days

Come on out to help beautify our campuses, check out the new middle school science curriculum garden area, hang with your friends, listen to some great Rooftop kids’ bands and eat a taco, or two! At Rooftop, we try to make it fun to plant and work with other Rooftop families! Middle school students receive community service hours and science extra credit points! Winter Workshop

Winter Workshop is a labor of love that can't happen successfully without volunteer support. If you are interested in volunteering to support this event please contact art@rooftopk8.org.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon

Towards the end of the school year, the Rooftop community honors our hardworking teachers, administration and staff members. This festive luncheon is spearheaded by parents with organizational and culinary talents but the whole community contributes with home made meals and/or financial contributions. Lunch is served in our beautiful garden where all of our staff enjoy their well-deserved feast. If you are interested in supporting this Spring event please contact pta@rooftopk8.org.

Student Events

Morning Circle

At 10:40am every day, all Rooftop students gather in the yard to sing our school song. One class presents a project to their fellow students. Parents are encouraged to join in.

Sing-along

Every Friday morning around 9:40am, grades K-5 gather in the Multi Purpose Room or yard for a celebration of music, song and Rooftop Spirit. Parents are invited to join in!

Trim-a-tree

Every year during the holidays, Rooftop is invited to decorate one of the trees at Davies Symphony Hall. Each student at Rooftop, grades K-8, makes an ornament using a method and media determined by the Art Coordinators to create a fabulous one-of-a-kind tree!

Winter Workshop

For three days in December, students in grades 1-5 participate in a workshop of the student’s choice to create a beautiful gift for a loved one. Students in grades 6-8 may participate in an optional Winter Workshop held after school at the Mayeda Campus. There are over twenty different workshops offered each year by teachers and art parent volunteers. The students create, complete, and wrap a gift and everyone celebrates with a festive Workshop party.

International Multicultural Festival (IF)

The IF is a tradition that was started in 2004 to celebrate and honor our diverse cultures and embrace the common ties that unite us. We come together through the inspirational talent and expression in song, dance, acting and poetry of our children, and with the wonderful contributions of delicious hand made food from the various cultures in our broad Rooftop community.

On the day of the festival, students perform their acts, and the whole school tries out bite size morsels of food made by the families of their classmates. The Mayeda campus has tables from each continent in the yard.

The first half of performances (Act 1) runs from approximately 9:45-11:30am and is for K-8th grades. At 11:30 grades K-4 walk back to Burnett. After lunch, grades 5-8 continue to watch the second half of the IF performances.

The IF is meant to be a day of celebration and empowerment, recognition and building self confidence through creative expression -- and of course really good food!
