Rooftop Visual Arts Program grades K-8
The goal of the art program at Rooftop is to bring art to each classroom on a regular basis. For most classes in grades K-5, art parent volunteers teach art lessons on a weekly basis in coordination with the classroom teacher. We have over 100 art volunteers each year. Grades 6-8 have a daily art class, taught by Cyndy Sugawara. Through the art program, the students become familiar with the elements of art and expand their experiences with art media as they progress through the grades. They develop artistic skills as they learn about the art process and, more importantly, they develop positive feelings of self-esteem. The art program is integral to Rooftop School’s vision. It enhances and reinforces the curriculum at Rooftop and is used as a critical extension of learning in core subject areas. Each year, student artwork is entered into various art contests such as the PTA Reflections and the Youth Arts Festival.
Performing Arts Program grades K-5
Rooftop works with teaching artists and arts providers, such as SF Arts Education Program — a highly successful program that has been placing professional artists in public schools for the past 25 years — to provide students with instruction in chorus, dance, and drama.
Performing Arts Program grades 6-8
Instructors Shannon Day and Elizabeth Rosas work with grades 6-8 to develop the music and theater skills of participating students. The 10-week course of study culminates in a performance, Dare to Perform, in December.
“ART IS...” grades K-8
“ART IS...”is a Rooftop arts education program that uses works of art to provide an inexhaustible resource for exploration, reflection and understanding. The program actively engages students, supports learning across the curriculum, and builds critical thinking skills through “hands-on” art making, reflection and research. “ART IS...” uses the Lincoln Center Institute model of aesthetic education and focuses on live works of art to develop integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum that will support learning for all students.
Winter Workshop
For three days in December, students in grades 1-5 participate in a workshop of the student’s choice to create a beautiful gift for a loved one. Students in grades 6-8 may participate in an optional Winter Workshop held afterschool at the Mayeda Campus. There are over twenty different workshops offered each year by teachers and art parent volunteers. The students create, complete, and wrap a gift and everyone celebrates with a festive Workshop party.
